.

Here, gathered in our beloved South Dakota, are a few members of our Williamson / Mattson Clan. Charles and Luella are to be blamed (be kind, they didn't know what they were doing). We're generally a happy bunch and somewhat intelligent (notwithstanding our tenuous grasp on reality). I'm also proud to say that most of us still have our teeth.

A Treasure of Information and Stories on The Life and Family of our Great Grand Uncle, Edward Mattson. Dedicated Policeman of Scranton Pennsylvania.

Great Grand Uncle Edward Mattson's eldest son
Edward Mattson Junior.  He was a well known
Lutheran pastor in the Scranton, Pennsylvania
area.  He served at both Christ Lutheran and
                      St. Mark's Lutheran Churches.
Edward Jr. was our First Cousin, Twice Removed.

Hello,
In today's digital family reunion I'd like to share with you my latest discoveries in an exhaustive search for the history of our Mattson great uncles and aunts.  Today we read about the life and times of our Great Grand Uncle Edward Mattson, his wife Nellie Johnson and their three sons; Edward Jr, Oscar, and Rudolph.

Relationship Chart:  Edward Mattson

Edward Mattson married Nellie Johnson in 1895. Both were Swedish immigrants.
to their children, our first cousins, twice removed.
     • Edward Mattson: Born about 1897. Was a Lutheran Pastor in the Scranton Area.
           • Oscar Mattson:  Born 1899. Was a Scranton Policeman like his father.
                • Esther Mattson: Born 1902. Died March 28, 1907 of Scarlet Fever
                     • Hilldus Mattson: Born 1905. Died April 2, 1907 of Meningitis.
                            • Rudolph Mattson: born January 8, 1908.  Tenor, performer.
Rudolph later changed his name to Eric:  Please see the next blog post for a bio on his life.

Uncle Edward Mattson was born Edvard Mattsson on the 28th of August, 1865 to Emanuel and Helena Mattsson in Rossared, Hallend, Sweden.  His twin brother was Emil.  The parish record of their births is given below.

This is the only photograph I have at the moment of Uncle Edward Mattson and his wife Nellie taken on the occasion of their 30th wedding anniversary.  You can easily see the Mattson resemblance even in this poor newspaper photo.

More information on Edward and his family is given in the following 1910 US Federal Census.

Uncle Edward Mattson was a well liked Scranton, Pennsylvania policeman.  His service is very well documented in the newspapers of the day.  The newspaper record also includes good details on the lives of his wife and children; Edward Jr., Oscar, and Rudolph.
Edward Jr., became the Lutheran pastor of Christ Lutheran Church.  He and his brother Oscar served as sergeants in Europe during World War I.  You'll read a few interesting stories about their time during the war in the clippings below.
Please take the time to read through the clippings. They give you a fascinating look at the Mattson family at the turn of the last century.  It goes without saying that our Great Grand Uncle had a rewarding, rich and very interesting life!

Simply,
Victor

ARE YOU A MATTSON?  I'm looking for our Mattson cousins as part of this large family history project.  Please contact me if you are descended from of any of the children of Emanuel and Helena Mattsson from Fjaras, Halland, Sweden (refer to the Relationship Charts above).  We would love to swap stories and photographs.

Luella remembers a story about Edward told to her by her grandfather John Albert Mattson, Edward's brother, about why Edward joined the Scranton police force shortly after immigrating to the US.
"My great uncle Edward and his buddies would get up in the morning and go down to the Scranton bars looking to pick fights with the local Irishmen.  The Swedes and the Irish hated each other.  They would go into the bars, find the Irish and throw them out into the streets.  One day they were caught by the police.  Edward ran to avoid arrest, got home, sped right past his new bride, jumped into bed and hid under the covers.  The policeman followed him home, enter the house, went up the stairs and pounded on the bedroom door saying, "Edward, you've got two choices, join the police or we're taking you in!"  Edward joined the police shortly afterwords."

The following photos are taken from Googlemaps showing where the Mattson home stood at 166 South Hyde Park Ave, in Scranton.  The home on the right is #164.  The homes on the left start with #170.  I don't know what happened to #166 and 168.

Where #166 once stood.

Looking down South Hyde Park Ave.

The following two photos show St. Mark's Lutheran Church as it looks today.  It is no longer a Lutheran church from what I can see.  It looks a bit run down.

Hello All,
It's a bright sunny day in Utah Valley.  A high pressure system has found a home above us, creating an inversion of cold stagnant air in the valley being held in place by warmer air above.  Inversions bring pollution.  From the Fortress window, I see the yellowish air layered over  the valley below.  Without a storm in the forecast, the air will grow worse as this week progresses.
Today in our digital family gathering I'd like to share Grandma Violet's baby book.  Violet May Pierce was born on June 12, 1918 in Torrington, Wyoming.
There are many previous posts in this blog detailing Grandma Violet's history.  I encourage you to find and read them.  She was a wonderful woman loved by everyone who knew her.

Simply,
Victor

Happy New Year 2014. Family Pictures to Share. Williamson, Mattson

From the Fortress of Solitude
Pleasant Grove

Happy New Year!
2014 finds us somewhat healthy and most always happy here at the Fortress.  I'm hoping all is well with you and yours at the start of this new year.
I'm an old fuddy dud when it comes to bringing in the new year.  I was in bed asleep as the old year slipped away and the new year dawned.  My neighbors made sure I didn't stay asleep though.  It sounded like the Battle for Britain outside the windows. Large explosions echoed through the valley as fireworks lit up the night sky.  Those without fireworks made up for it by banging pots and pans on their patios, decks and driveways.  Since I was already awake, I decided to get up and use the bathroom - save me a trip later in the night. "So this is what the apocalypse will sound like," I thought as I washed my hands.   Things settled down as soon as the teenagers finished off their bottle rockets and went inside.  It was too cold to stay outside - a blessing for those of us wanting to say goodbye to 2013 with a good night's sleep.
I rummaged through one of my photo albums for today's New Year blogpost.  It's an assortment of family shots that I hope you enjoy.

Happy New Year 2014!

Simply,
Victor

Janice and Jon's Senior Pictures.  Steven's High School

And here he is a few years later in his hard rock band Sibling Rivalry.  He is seated in the center of the pack.   We took comfort in the fact that he wore a cross as an earring.  You take anything you can get when it gets this bad :)

Sibling Rivalry broke up after a few years.  Jon has since moved on, married, and produced a Williamson heir.  He is the funniest of the Williamson siblings and blessed or cursed (depending on how you look at things) with most laid back personality imaginable.  Where he got that, we don't know.

This is JD  DelGrosso, husband to my sister Kim, on the slopes near their home in Frisco, Colorado.  This picture was taken in the early 1980's.

Jilane is seen here with suitcase in hand in front of Kim and JD's log cabin home in Frisco.  Forrest, Brandon, Amber and Ashley can brag of their humble log cabin upbringing in the high forests of Colorado.

I'm assuming Jilane is walking toward the car pictured above.  This was our Rambler SST stationwagon.  Luella and Annette are in the front seat.  Again, early 1980's.

Luella's handwriting on the back of the photo above tells it all.  This was taken in 1977.

Lisa showing off the hole in her mouth where a second earlier there had once been a tooth.  What an awesome brother I was to document this moment for prosperity's sake.   This may be the only picture we have our our 38th Street upstairs bathroom.
Lisa took the tooth pulling rather well based on her appearance.  Either that or she's thinking about the quarter the tooth fairy will leave for her in the night. We didn't have a lot of money in those days, so a quarter was a big deal.  You could buy two dozen red vines for that!

We jump forward a few years to see Lisa in her softball uniform.  Wouldn't it be awesome to have her recreate this photo today?

The youngest Williamson sitting on the bench under our 38th Street home's picture window.   Annette steadies the bench with one hand.  She knew how wobbly it was.  Those who thought the bench was there for sitting soon found out how wrong they were!

Lisa and Annette on our couch with Uncle John.

I usually don't post pictures of myself.  The family love to ridicule my glasses.  I keep reminding them that they were in style back then but they refuse to believe me.  Yes, that's me on the grounds of the Provo LDS Temple.  I was a custodian in the Temple toward the end of my BYU days.

Found this good picture of Nicole Burrows celebrating her 2nd Christmas.  Nicole is my sister Janice's firstborn daughter.

A good photograph of the Mattson family visiting Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Left to right: Joe, Angie, Bev holding Candace, John, Camille, Jake and Gina.  Kirk is missing.

Uncle John with sons Joe and Jake.

An finally a quiet shot with Jake, Camille and Bev in the visitors center.  That must be Candace asleep or playing under the bench.
